Discuss 3D display modes. This is a point of some potential confusion so DFWGames is here to bring clarity.

Ancient updates to this post will be added.

For starters pretty much all the new 3DTVs appear to support the same set of common 3D modes that is….

1. 1080x24 Frame Packed (3D BD)

2. 720x60 Frame Packed (3D games - PS3)

3. 1080i Frame Compatible Side-by-Side (3D from CBL, SAT etc)

4. 720P Frame Compatible Top/Bottom (3D from CBL, SAT etc.)

HDMI 1.4

Which 3D video formats are contained in HDMI 1.4?
The HDMI 1.4 specification includes information on a wide range of 3D display formats at up to 1080p resolution, including:

field alternative
frame alternative
line alternative
side-by-side half
side-by-side full
L + depth
L + depth + graphics + graphics depth

----------------------------------------
Additional Modes:

· DLP based 3DTV's also support checkerboard mode.

· Samsung 3DTVs support several additional 3D modes.

Most additional modes wouldn't be needed unless you are working with source material that uses them such as home made 3D content and other content you might use on a PC.
